*WARNING: The entire post is “too long for email” sayeth Substack, so I’m guessing the ASCOC schedule with anchor links won’t show in full. For the best experience, read read it my blog. If this is your jam, of course.*
Last week, I thought that I would like to watch all the features of the now absorbed-by-High-Limit-Racing All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series. Having watched a lot of these live, and not planning to do this as a blog post, I didn’t watch these in chronological order and skipped a couple for rewatching that I had more recently viewed and recalled. Notes range from a couple sentences to paragraphs depending on how into it I was.
Because I know this is a lot of text and not intuitive, I’m gonna do you a solid and make this worth your while if you want to navigate: Here’s a list at the bottom of the piece and it’ll internally link to the little write up I did for the race you want to read about. Also, since Flo so kindly posts highlight packages from every feature on YouTube, I linked them. All of them. You want specific recommendations? Volusia night 2, Jacksonville, Tusky 50, Attica 9/15 and 4/7, Lake Ozark, and Weedsport.
Selinsgrove (8/20/2023)
Zeb Wise basically dominates a race here. Brent Marks finished top 3 and looked strong throughout. Also fun runs from Courtney and DD; the latter charges his way into the Top 5 but it takes all race. Big track!
Butler (8/26/2023)
Mace Thomas Classic won by Tyler Courtney. He’d won the I-96 version too IIRC. First time seeing this place and it is a paperclip with fairly high banking.
Jacksonville (5/12/2023)
High bank ⅕ mile midget track that is inappropriate but wonderful for these cars. Local guy missed the turn in and front flipped. Insane action up front. Hunter Schuerenberg eventually takes the win. A little messy to be considered a ROTYC.
Red Hill (7/2/2023)
Kind of a wide track, low banking, probably ⅓ mile or something like that? It’s fine. Bill Balog has a pretty dominant win here.
Ransomville (7/7/2023)
I guess this is a NY track and it is super duper slick which follows with the stereotype I’ve heard of NY tracks. Zeb Wise wins by 11 seconds because he can rip the top and everyone else is stuck around the bottom. Kerry Madsen is in the Musical Chairs 55 that Schuerenberg started the year in and won at Jacksonville (and an IRA race at Wilmot) driving and finishes second even though he has a tire going down. Paulie Colagiovanni finished 6th and a guy I’d never heard of named Nate Dussel finished 5th. He races Fremont primarily, but does some other shows as well and this was his only 410 start outside Ohio for the year. AND. AND. Sye Lynch started on the pole, crashed on lap 2 in the lead and ruined his ride. “Classic Sye Lynch” says my buddy Stephen.
34 Raceway (7/21/2023)
I just blinked out for a lot of this TBH. Austin McCarl was out in front for a good long time, and then with three to go, Zeb Wise goes to the lead, Aaron Reutzel takes second, and McCarl winds up finishing third. This is the 3rd of 5 races I’ve rewatched in this specific stint of viewing in which Zeb Wise wins.
Tri-City Speedway (8/25/2023)
This is the Michigan track, I think? Yup, it is. Weird track that looks like it was a 1 mile shortened to a ⅜. Confirmed that but it was only a ½ mile paved track. Turns 3 and 4 are WIIIIIIDE. Kraig Kinser got in the 70 and was FIRE. Dude had been nowhere all year. Darin Naida had a good finish! This was an exciting race with no carnage! Guess who won? It was Zeb Wise!
Dodge County Fairgrounds (6/2/2023)
IRA vs. All Stars. Track looks fuckin sick as a hick facility. Catch fencing the whole way around that looks like it wouldn’t hold back a bowling ball. I can’t believe I’m writing this, but the most important story of the year for me in sports was “Rico Abreu commits to the High Limit Series in 2024.” Marks throws an incredible slider to try and take the lead from Eliason with about 5 to go. Just about every race has at least one thing like this where it’s just so phenomenal and the action just floors me. I’ve watched this hundreds of times this year and yet almost every time something happens that brings me a very youthful, exuberant joy. If this had been on ESPN2 for every race, maybe our nation is in a different place. Eliason wins, and I kind of appreciate his narrative as a guy who’s sort of wound up in the discard pile a few times and yet he’ll give you a reminder of his qualities.
Utica-Rome (8/19/2023)
More NY tracks that I would typically expect to see big block mods on. Local guy Danny Varin is on pole and took off at the start. Guess what? This race rocks too. Slicks off as there aren’t any cautions and Varin only briefly is challenged by Kerry Madsen on his way to his first ever 410 touring win. Courtney makes his way through the field and is just slicing and dicing, and then Zeb Wise does it, and then Stewart Friesen does it, leading to a 3 car battle amongst Friesen, Windom, and Madsen for the 4th spot. Real big nail biter for a lot of guys including the leader and I’m watching it months after the fact.
Eldora (9/23/2023)
This is from the 4 Crown Nationals, and the attendees have a strong “High Limit” feel to them including Kahne and Abreu. 2023 was a year where every race at Eldora was kinda ass and this was no different. PPM started on pole and lasted up front for about a lap before Courtney dispatched him. Then Abreu came up to take the lead and stayed there until he wound up in the wall all on his own breaking the front end. Wise at that point assumes the point and clears the field and tech after the restart; Sye Lynch gets a podium finish and battles with Courtney for second unsuccessfully.
Bridgeport (5/25/2023)
10K to win race so you know the locals are into it. Race starts with a monster wreck that involves multiple drivers and Justin Peck’s cage winds up being split above the driver’s head after he’s run into upside down. There’s an obvious edit here where the wreck happens and they removed the part where Peck is hit, but it’s on YouTube if you want to see it and it’s replayed after it’s clear Peck is OK. Peck climbs out and this wouldn’t even be the hardest lick of the year for him, though it was certainly the one where it looked most likely as though he might be killed. Race is nothing great: some right rear failures bring cautions but in the end Courtney just runs away with it as Anthony Macri runs out of time and finishes 3rd after charging hard.
Wilmot (5/13/2023)
Courtney and Schuerenberg battle up front for the first half of the race with Hunter constantly shutting the door on Courtney in the straight aways. That’s a consistent thing for those two, probably because Courtney is so good at running up top and keeping a head of steam regardless of track. Wilmot is a great track to watch races at in my experience - consistent two lines with good technical drivers taking the bottom (the ex-USAC guys absolutely doing that) and others opting to run around up high wide open. Best race is around 4th with Thiel, Lynch, Shaffer, and Balog slugging it out.
Fremont (6/10/2023)
Nate Dussel is in this as is Darin Naida! Cody Maroske is here from the Gold Coast! Buddy Kofoid! DOUBLE D. Cap Henry on the front row and probably gonna crash! LFG. 10K to win show. OK, I think I watched this race live before because Dietrich wins, passing Cap Henry on the last lap in the last corner. Before the last restart caused by a Tim Shaffer broken trail arm, it was an OK race, but that was one helluva ending.
Benton (7/26/2023)
Derek Hagar, a local who primarily does 360 races, wins this one: I watched it live or next day. Really slick track and he benefited from knowing how to run it. Courtney, Windom, Veal crash almost immediately. Parker Price Miller also winds up on his side. Camera is on the back stretch for some reason.
Wayne County (6/12/2023)
OH Sprint Week event, 10k to win. Track is dog shit: wet, ruts everywhere, guys popping wheelies when they hit the gas on exit. Feature lasted 10 minutes with Courtney winning. Bottom was the move. Spithaller winds up in the infield obliterating the Tezos banner. Best race was 2nd-4th amongst Trey Jacobs, Ricky Peterson, and Cap Henry.
Portsmouth (6/17/2023)
Last event of Ohio Sprint Week: Rico on pole, Marks starts 3rd. I like his track a lot: looks like it has good sight lines for spectators, a big honking fence, and lots of room to race. Phenomenal race for 26 laps and we get a caution for a slow car as Justin Peck is cruising towards a hard fought win over Marks, Abreu, Kofoid (in the Vermeer 55), and Wise. Left rear goes down for Peck with 2 to go and battling with Marks and that is crushing. Zeb also breaks under caution. Marks holds on and Macri is in the top 3?
Attica (9/1/2023)
First of two nights here in a row at one of the old haunts of the All Stars. Dusty AF because Ohio. Reinhardt tries to make a move on Kerry Madsen and misses the slide job, causing him to fall way back into the clutches of Courtney and Wise who had been battling for 3rd well behind. Madsen wins pretty handily in the Vermeer 55.
Attica (9/2/2023)
Did you like night one where the top five had Madsen leading Courtney, Wise, Reinhardt, and Windom? It’s the same thing tonight for $12K. Wise gets past Madsen around halfway and just dominates the rest of the way with Courtney chasing desperately.
Port Royal (5/27/2023)
I watched the Tusky 50 live and the night before, but I don’t recall watching the first or second night from the Bob Weikert Memorial at the moment. Mike Wagner is out front for about the first half of the race but gets bogged down in traffic and Macri just goes right by not breaking his momentum. Good action for 3rd back to about 9th too with all the usual suspects (Marks, DeWease, Whittal, Wise, Courtney, et al). Actually I probably did see this because Macri just stomped everyone and then was out of the car a few weeks later.
Port Royal (5/28/2023)
Bob Weikert Memorial Day #2: DeWease and Borden up front to start: DeWease takes off and he’s ahead by a mile in no time. Sye Lynch breaks on the front stretch and the lead DeWease had is entirely negated. Macri up to 2nd on the restart but DeWease is once again out ahead by a couple seconds. Ends that way too. Good night for the PA guys who dominate the entire top 5.
Volusia (2/7/2023)
Tuesday feature, AKA the season opener for the All Stars and basically everyone. As they started before the Outlaws, all those guys showed up too. Front row in fact is Gravel on point and Sweet outside. Cory Eliason was in the Indy Race Parts 71 earlier in the year and I forgot right up until I saw he trashed the car in turn 2. Schuchart gets by Gravel on the last lap for 2nd and Sweet wins. Some decent action midway through in the 3rd-4th-5th zone.
Volusia (2/8/2023)
Wednesday feature time: this was on my birthday and while I would guess that I would have watched it, I was also flying to Vegas then so probably not. Macri makes contact with Schatz’s front wing while throwing a slider to get by him and janks it up good. This is a great race, man. All the action from the lead to 5th in this one over the course of the event. Schatz gets out in front on an incredible run in 2 but the wing just blows straight back and winds up inverted. Macedo wins, Schatz 2nd, McFadden barely holds onto 3rd. This is the shit.
Fremont (9/15/2023)
Ford Friday or something. PPM jumps out to the lead early and he's in the 9P for this. Fremont as a track is at most a two groove affair and it's flat and small but that means it isn't a horsepower track. Kyle Reinhardt takes the lead from PPM; I should mention that Reinhardt is in the 45 that Shaffer ran for awhile and Shaffer is in the 49x. Law firm takes lead with 4 to go but Reinhardt gets by him at the line with a strong run off 4.
Fremont (9/16/2023)
Ford Saturday as the season is getting wound down for the All Stars. Brice Lucius hasn’t been consistent but he has been fast at Fremont: top 5 early. Madsen has been fast in the 55 every time I see it and he, Courtney, and Wise are the top 3 again. Courtney hits traffic in this race goes bananas. Zeb Wise manages it better and then takes off into the lead. Lucius spins for a caution with 10 remaining. There’s some fun racing between Wise and Reinhardt for the lead but ultimately Wise proves to have too much. Really good race here.
Sharon (7/8/2023)
Blaney Memorial; second race at Sharon for the All Stars on the schedule. Macedo is in the 29 this week but his engine blows up early running second. Dave Blaney is in the field in the 10! Darin Gallagher with a massive crash on the backstretch but is OK. This is the best run I've seen for Chris Windom in a while; he's in second from about lap 1 to the checkered. Courtney has everyone covered; Blaney finishes top 5, Wise is 3rd.
Knoxville (7/29/2023)
Strong list of entries with Wise and Windom in the back. Macri in the 7BC, Kofoid on pole, Kahne and Abreu here too. Justin Henderson ripping the top to go up to second. Rico does Rico things and winds up in the lead and this is Good Stuff. Maguski spins and is smoking a bunch. Restart didn't really mean much: Buddy finishes second behind Rico, Henderson third.
Attica (6/9/2023)
Ohio Sprint Speedweek opener. Attica has great racing but I do kinda hate how there's a big gap between the front stretch and stands. Jordan Ryan is out front for this one at the start; first and perhaps only All Stars laps led. Cale Thomas is in the 49, which I recognize as he flips kinda spinning then just wheelies over; 4 of Windom also involved but fine. Look, this is another great race between Wise and Courtney for like 20 laps. Wise winds up winning by going to the high line on the last lap and going around the outside of Courtney as they approach the flag. Ryan finished third.
Atomic (6/15/2023)
Tim Shaffer jumps out front early and we have a weirdo top 5 including JJ Hickle and Cole Duncan as we pass halfway. Lots of cautions; nothing dramatic in terms of accidents though thankfully. Shaffer makes contact with the turn 4 wall on exit on the next to last lap and almost throws away the win, but goes and gaps JJ Hickle again shortly afterwards. Some fun racing around 3rd, not much else to write home about.
East Bay (2/13/2023)
Tim Shaffer is in the 3TK here and he’s going wheel to wheel with Alex Bowman early on. Shame this track is going away. Is Alex Bowman really in the car? It’s not going backwards and crashing. Courtney is way out in front when Thiel spins with 19 remaining. Peck is looking strong in 3rd and now I think back to how he won the Icebreaker and it felt like Peck’s year was finally here until his cage shattered. Shaffer’s right rear goes down because “new Hoosiers” and drops from near the top of the order. Speaking of Peck, he winds up working his way up to first when Hafertepe Jr. causes a caution by slowing in 3 & 4. Courtney regains the lead on lap 4 with a high side pass, then gaps Peck. Bowman eventually falls to 6th. Good race! Not spectacular, but good.
East Bay (2/14/2023)
Weird first lap accident where Tim Shaffer loops it after caution comes out for a different issue and collects PPM. Courtney is checking out early when Sam Hafertepe Jr. brings out another caution (a lot of cautions in 2023 TBH). Last ten laps is once again Courtney vs. Peck. Kofoid drops from contention and a caution comes out with 5 to go; Schuerenberg and Macri are in the mix still and Zeb Wise is all the way up to 5th from 21st. They fight it out some more, Courtney wins again, and Wise and Macri both make their way past Hunter Schuerenberg.
Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal (10/5/2023)
I watched this live, Brian Brown won what was a nailbiter even though he was doing well throughout. Kyle Larson finishes second, Chase Randall third. Chase Randall had led a bunch of this but got passed by Brent Marks who promptly crashed (a repeating theme throughout the 2023 year, honestly). Buddy Kofoid also had a strong car for this and once again managed to not finish. Big wreck for Devon Borden, the track champion, as he winds up flipping hard. Some controversy about the finish too as Brown squeezed Randall against the wall and basically gave Chase the option of either killing him in an insane crash or letting Brown by. Randall let him by, but was not happy.
Eldora (6/16/2023)
Apparently Ohio Sprint Speedweek turned 40 this year, just like me! Sam Hafertepe Jr. is on pole - good for him. He’s had a rough time in 410 racing thus far and clearly anyone who wins a ASCS title or two is probably passable at minimum. Cory Eliason with a huge crash in the early going while running 6th. Cale Thomas and JJ Hickle bring out a caution though neither hit each other and it seems to that tires went down; Cody Maroske’s top wing just falls apart while Shaffer’s front wing collapses. Eldora was a mess this year, man. No one can pass, the surface had a lot of “character” for somewhere that also had entrance speeds of 150mph, and oh hey it’s Rico and he’s in the pits too for a left rear change. Hafertepe wins, a fact that everyone immediately chose to forget. Kofoid is second in the Vermeer 55 (this is a car that can win in 2024 in HL) and behind him is Marks.
Outlaw (8/18/2023)
NEW YAWK. Looks like a ¼ mile with the widest turn 1 this side of the Burke Lakefront Airport circuit. Sye Lynch is running second right now: I will remember when this is over to look at his stats because it sure seems like he sucks when the track isn’t covered in teflon. As was often the case, the top 5 at midway contains the Vermeer 55 with Madsen behind the wheel, Zeb Wise, and leader Tyler Courtney. Chris Windom does pretty well too, as I think the surface benefits him. Paulie Colagiovanni looks strong also because once more: New. York. Not much of a race ultimately as the 7BC leads every single lap. This was Courtney’s first race back after fracturing discs merely driving at Eldora for the Million thanks to it having a speed bump sized concretion that formed in Turn 1.
Outlaw (5/19/2023)
Rain did a number on the first NY leg for the All Stars, but this race came off. Windom and Lynch are both running top 6; put a pin in that. Shaffer has been out front since the drop of the green once we approach halfway; Wise is chasing him with PPM 3rd and Courtney (unaware his title defense would be soon ruined) 4th. Wise with a nice over/under move when Shaffer has problems getting through traffic running the low line and he takes off. Colagiovanni is in the field and as such you know he’s running well - Top 5 guy pretty much all night. PPM finally manages to get around Shaffer as Shaffer is struggling when he hits traffic, all of whom occupy the bottom line like him. Wise is out in front by a mile running the top when no one else will. Is this place a circle now that I see the flag stand angle to T1? I have many questions, like “Zeb Wise looked great in 2023; why don’t more people talk about him?”
Lernerville (7/18/2023)
Front row consists of Buddy Kofoid and Kyle Larson, and Buddy almost immediately throws his race away going over the bank of Turn 2 only to be saved when backmarkers spin and we get a complete restart. Larson gets by with 12 or so to go, I forget. Track is really really slick by the end of this as there are no cautions after the initial one, leading to a great Marks/Kofoid battle for second that Marks wins out on. Justin Peck in fact gets all the way up into 3rd as a result of this back and forth.
I-70 Speedway (7/28/2023)
Star studded lineup with Knoxville guys, Abreu, and Buddy all showing up. This track is extremely good; giant walls a la Knoxville, wide, fast, guys making moves, surface is nice, I’m very happy with this. One very open purpose for watching this is to say “Where do I want to go see a sprint car race next?” and this is on the list. JJ Hickle stops on track with 9 to go and brings out the first caution; he was going low to let the leaders by earlier and almost ran into a dive bombing Rico. Reutzel and Abreu had a helluva war for 2nd. Corey Day is here and he’s running really fast, occasionally running a line in 4 that basically requires him to buzz pit in. Kofoid 1, Reutzel 2, Abreu 3, and Day 4th. Justin Sanders is in the Macri 39 and finishes 5th, while Macri is still in exile, filling in for Sunshine and has mechanical issues that keep him from a great finish.
Williams Grove (5/26/2023)
It’s the Grove with a 10K to win race. Anthony Macri is in the famly car still at this point and was looking like an absolute beast having won a bunch already without the calendar hitting June, but he’s behind Chase Dietz. That is until Dietz spins it and Freddie Rahmer spins to avoid him. Neither hits anything, thank god. Borden had gotten by Macri, but it no longer mattered. The crowd is audible over the engines because we wind up with Lance DeWease in second and dueling with/overtaking Macri for the lead with Borden and Dietrich running 3rd and 4th. Courtney’s right rear explodes with 4 to go, setting up an all PA Posse battle amongst the top 6. DeWease wins his 45th All Star race in the end.
Attica (4/7/2023)
Going back to the early stages of the season for this 6K to win race. Brent Marks is here so I guess this was the best option for a quick payday that weekend. Halfway through Craig Mintz starts to spoil the All Stars party by doing battle with Wise and Marks (Hunter Schuerenberg is out in front by miles) and we get a really good back and forth race for 2nd. After a caution, we get a 4 car race for the win with three wide action, all sorts of stuff going on. Mintz tries to roll the middle to get up to Zeb Wise and throws a huge slider that Zeb gets him back on, but the next lap is the final one and guess what? Mintz goes up top and manages to power off to the victory. First time he won an All Star event in 11 years. Zeb gives him a hug after the race. I think I might be extremely pro Zeb Wise. Also his team owner looks like Mickey Rourke.
Attica (4/8/2023)
Second night of action at the start of the year. Cale Thomas is on pole and jumps out front early. Shaffer and Schuerenberg, both of whom will lose these rides, collide for 6th bringing out a caution. Wise gets by Thomas eventually and Brent Marks starts to make his way towards the front too (Marks started the feature in 20th). With 6 to go, Marks gets by and into the lead while working heavy traffic. Wise winds up finishing 2nd and Courtney 3rd.
Port Royal (9/8/2023)
Night before the 50, except then it wasn’t. Reutzel showed up and made the front row; Brian Brown is way back in 20th. Oh, what a difference a month makes. Devon Borden runs this high line in 4 that takes him roughly 2 inches from the wall on exit and he is insanely fast when he doesn’t wind up making contact. People love Port Royal for a reason, right? Reutzel is out in front for 2/3s of the race and loses the lead to Courtney when he tags the wall running the high line. DeWease and Logan Wagner in the car that was DeWease’s earlier in the year are going crazy for 2nd, Reutzel’s tire blows out and Borden runs into him, and we get a 4 lap shootout. Courtney isn’t seriously challenged though as DeWease finishes second and Wise is third.
Atomic (5/4/2023)
Kyle Larson is in attendance and that’s probably sufficient as a spoiler. High side is really bumpy. Cale Thomas is in the 91 rather than the 49 that he’d spend much of the season in. Abreu, Ryan Timms, Blake Hahn, Kraig Kinser, Brent Marks, Cole Macedo, and Lance DeWease all made the haul. Lots of rear tire issues with cars having tire problems left and right. Zeb Wise’s explodes on the front stretch and miraculously no one runs into him too badly. Courtney (Larson’s only serious challenger) finishes second, Abreu third.
Lake Ozark (7/27/2023)
Thursday of the week prior to the Knoxville Nationals (the biggest race in the sport) and so there’s a lot of names here making spot appearances: Aaron Reutzel, Justin Sanders (in the Macri 39), Buddy Kofoid, Corey Day, Tanner Holmes, Sam Hafertepe Jr, Aussies Jamie Veal and Lachlan McHugh, Mario Clouser, Blake Hahn. High banks and narrow radius makes for some interesting lines and some different names up near the front like Ayrton Gennetten. The racing is so good here from first to about eighth that I feel a tear in my right eye form and roll down my cheek. It reminds me a bit of Huset’s in South Dakota and this is a ringing endorsement. Reutzel throws a slider on Buddy Kofoid that makes some contact but both hang on and Reutzel is never challenged again. Parker Price Miller’s best race of the year that I’d seen.
Weedsport (5/21/2023)
Do I love New York dirt tracks? I might! Paulie Colagiovanni starts second; why lie, I love the name. Track is super shiny and slick looking and racing it too. Matt Farnham is just dusting these guys in the first half of the race and I couldn’t be happier to see local boyz doin’ gud. Cory Eliason and Scotty Thiel are running the high side and making up ground though, with Eliason taking the lead with 4 to go. Where did Zeb Wise come from? He suddenly shoots to 2nd with two to go and he’s running the low side trying to track down Eliason. Caution for Hunter Schuerenberg in the 55 as he noses into the wall. Sadly on the restart Farnham falls to 5th behind Courtney and Thiel, but it’s nice seeing Eliason win something too.
Spoon River (7/22/2023)
High banks at this place and a lot of room to race. Video is choppy during action. Kraig Kinser showed up to race tonight and he’s running the bottom successfully. Brian Bell puts his car on his lid causing an open red situation and you can see out back there’s not a lot preventing guys from potentially winding up in the woods. Bill Balog leads this flag to flag; there’s some OK racing here and there but the cautions kept it from being too good. In particular, Wise and Balog were really mixing it up when Cole Macedo brought out a yellow. Is what it is. I like the track though.
Plymouth (6/3/2023)
The end of the long road and the beginning of a new journey with the IRA Sprints with this second All Stars vs. IRA event. Plymouth has a great covered grandstand and has been a long standing favorite of mine to watch for those boys. Abreu and Marks are starting up front because there is good money out there and of course they want to show up. Jordan Goldsberry climbs JJ Hickle’s left rear and pirouettes down the front stretch. Race for 2nd with Macri, Windom, and Marks gets wild at the end with contact and a whole lot of activity, but Abreu comes out on top with Marks finishing second.
